The second biggest problem in running a computer or a computer system, these days, is keeping your data, and your identity, safe from prying eyes. (The biggest problem? backup, of course.) Essential Computer Security - Everyone’s guide to e-mail, internet, and wireless security by Tony Bradley and Harlan Carvey — ISBN 1-59749-114-4 from Syngress — covers a very technical subject from a relatively non-technical approach. I suspect that if you’re a regular reader of my syndicated columns over the years, you may not find a lot new here, but then I haven’t read through all of it yet. The information on how to arrange your computer and your computing to protect your data seems solid, and you don’t have to be a techy to understand it. List price is $29.95, cheap if it can prevent even one break in. But you can save $10 at Amazon.
