Over the years, I’ve purchased and broken many different headphones for tiny portable radios — walkman - style contraptions — and MP3 players.  (I tend to use these things while exercising, and there’s a lot of stress in the gym.  But it takes away my stress, so it is a definite plus.)  Last night, when I finally, after months of using it mostly as a cell phone and to retrieve e-mail, loaded some MP3 files and digital pictures files to the recently purchased Motorola Q9c, I suddently became aware that none of those headphones, earbuds or whatever worked with the smart phone.

It seems that the Q9c, taking a cue from smartphone standards, have a 2.5 mm headphone jack, while all of those working,l and borken headphones that I’ve purchased over the years, have a 3.5 mm plug.  Reminds me of those cigarette advertisements from years ago (although I don’t remember the brand): A Silly Millimeter wider.

The solution, of course, is to puchase Motorola-branded BlueTooth stereo headphones-microphone which play MP3s until the phone rings, then suspend the music while the conversation happens.  At $130, however, that’s not going to happen today.  Maybe I will take a cue from the article linked above, however, and take a couple of those broken headphones or earbuds which are mostly broken around the plug area, and solder a 2.5 mm plug, and see if that does the job.
