Over the years, I’ve looked at several secure Web spaces designed to be shared by opposing parties or co-counsel for sharing of electronic documents for discovery or collaboration. Different sites provide different tool sets, but they all provided, at a minimum, for upload and viewing of documents by authorized users, and they all came with hefty charges, albeit the charges were insignificant in view of the money and fees involved.

OnSite E-Discovery, which seems to provide a lot of different litigation support services including, of all things, electronic discovery, has gone into the related Web-based “room” document sharing business.
There are many ways to charge for such a facility, including setup charges, termination fees, number of users, number or volume of documents stored, bandwidth, tools selected, or some combination of thereof. SecureDealRoom has a simpler paradigm: $20 per month per Megabyte of stored documents. Of course, the price goes down as the amount you store goes up.
Web space has gotten inexpensive of late, and it wouldn’t be difficult to buy space for a couple of Gigabytes of data for $10 per month, but SecureDealRoom purports to be secure, easy to manage and use, the company will scan documents and upload to your site, and you’ll pass it on to your client, anyhow. For more information, check the company Web site, or drop Tom Strack a note; his e-mail address is tstrack@onss.com.
I’ll be setting up a trial for the column, but in the meantime, if anyone decides to use this (or has been using it) please drop me a note.
