As predictably as Vista, the newest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system was late, O’Reilly and Associates is right on time with the latest in its “Nutshell” Series….Windows Vista in a Nutshell, by Preston Gralla. I’ll send for a copy for review in the column, but in the meantime, should you be in a position to start making decisions about Vista deployment, this new book is here to help.

Sebastopol, CA–Anticipation about Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows Vista, is building exponentially. Thankfully, after all the hype and attention paid to the Vista revolution–with its 50 million lines of code soon to be running on 400 million computers–Preston Gralla’s “Windows Vista in a Nutshell” (O’Reilly, $34.99), stands ready to answer the questions of power users, enthusiasts, small business owners, and IT professionals.

My own immediate plans are to get Vista with my next new computer, and maybe when I can determine that all of my favorite software and hardware are compatible the new system. (I haven’t yet gotten over that I cannot use my favorite scanner with Windows XP.) But Gralla apparently thinks that using the new OS is…uh….”fun”.

“Some may complain that Vista isn’t as revolutionary as it should be after five years of work,” writes Gralla in his recent PC World article. “But you don’t judge an OS by the amount of time developers put into it. You judge it by how useful and pleasurable it is to work with–and in these respects Windows Vista is a clear winner. It’s beautiful, sports much-improved security, offers superb networking capabilities…and maybe most of all, it’s just plan fun to use.

The Wii is “fun”. Watching the SuperBowl may be “fun”. Windows Vista? I’ll let you know after I get into it. In the meantime if you’re even thinking about Vista, this may be one way to go.
